The word "plumbing" is derived from the Latin word "plumbum", meaning lead, which was the basic metal plumbers worked with until about seventy (70) years ago. History tells us that plumbing as a need was thought of by the earliest known civilizations.

However plumbing as a complete system providing water for various needs such as bathing, drinking and waste removal is a relatively new idea developed in the United States, in the early part of the nineteenth century. Therefore, one can define plumbing today as the system of piping or other apparatus for conveying water, liquid wastes, sewerage, storm water and certain special gases or liquids within or adjacent to any building.
